    Advice on equipment needed

I hate to be the pessimist, but I'm afraid the Courtland closure is going to foul up our markets for years to come. I have roughly 3000 acres of hardwood timberlands, so I'd love to be more optimistic. But I can't see any good coming from this. Everything looked peaches and cream for as far the...

    Advice on equipment needed

Not sure if you are aware of this, but IP recently announced they are permanently closing their papermill in Courtland, AL sometime in the first quarter of next year. That's a huge mill, using about 350 loads of pulpwood daily. I notice your location is southern Alabama, and it's possible you...

    Komatsu Pc 210 lc

Look at the serial number. If it starts with "A", then it was built for the US market. If not, it is grey market.

Grading Land, filling in stump holes?

Instead of pushing all your dirt from one direction, push in an overlapping "X" pattern. That way if you do accidently make a washboard with your blade, your tracks and blade will be going at a 45 degree angle to the washboard on the next pass and won't keep exaggerating the bumps. The X...

    Fellerbuncher

A new fellerbuncher costs upward of $500,000, so you probably won't find one for rent. But even if you did, the cost to rent would probably exceed the value of the 100 trees. A typical 3/4" pitch bar/chain combo for a fellerbuncher sets you back around $500. A new operator can expect to trash...

Logging Accidents: And They Walked Away.........

Walked Away One of our trucks rolled over a couple of months ago. The driver was lucky as he only had a few scratches....

    1000 Foot Walnut

1000'+ Cherry Here's the best Black Cherry tree I've ever had the pleasure to put a saw in or lay eyes on. Been in the timber business for 30 years, yet this beauty was grown on my childhood farm. The tree was over 40" on the stump and 50' to the first branch. It yielded just over 1500' of...

    1999 Champion 720A

Here's a few pics of the 1999 Champion 720A we recently bought. State of Alabama bought it new (likely was "orange") and had it repainted yellow before selling it at auction. (Whoever did the paint job really did an outstanding job.) It only had 1977 hours on it when we bought it. It is...

    Your Lowboy Pictures Wanted

Here's some pics of our detach. Pitts made it custom for us with an 18" loaded deck height, 26' well, special red/black paint scheme, led lights, self-contained flashers, and custom stainless package (neck flashing and light trim rings). The first 2 pics were snapped by Pitts at the factory...

    Skidder Tires

I feel your pain... Just bought 4 Firestone "winter shoes" for our skidder in size 67-43-25. My advice is to shop around until you've called everyone within 7 states. And then shop around some more. There was a $5000.00 difference from low price to high price on the set (including wheels).

    2 trees to a load?

Big Tree Here is a picture of a large Red Oak I cut a few days ago that measured 65" across the stump and had 1024 board feet (Doyle rule) in the first 16' cut. For Tennessee, that's a big tree! The saw is a Husky 395XP with 28" bar.

    Clearing job pics.

Bell Ultra C Here are some pictures of a 2001 Bell Ultra C that was recently rebuilt from the frame up. I asked the dealer to email me these pictures. When I called the next day to talk to him about it I found out someone else had came by and purchased it. I'm still sick about missing this...

    Clearing job pics.

Your friend wouldn't be named Henry Zambesi by chance? Henry is from South Africa and used to work for Bell. He now lives on the east coast and owns a business that buys, sells and services Bells. I purchased a Bell Ultra T from him a few months ago and he has made the trip to Tennessee 3...

    Fuel Price By Location

If Congress would just open up ANWAR, all of the AK. North Slope, and all of the domestic off-shore areas to drilling it would be a huge blow to the speculators in the market. Have the president make a Kennedy like "space speach" and let the world know that by year's end we plan to have over...
