Cat has some really good failure analysis training. Someone knows where the failure started, unless the fracture surfaces obliterated themselves.

From the bad pictures I'd suspect it started in the rod journal radius.

Sorry Nige, I can't acquire any further information, I'm not part of the nephews operation, and I only speak to him on an irregular basis. I just picked up the photo from his Farcebook posts.

This happened this week. IMG_2515.jpgIMG_2514.jpg

This 7810 lives on the manure spreader. I took it off the spreader a week ago to grind hay and noticed the wear in the eye for the pin. I commented about getting a new bar, but it wasn't deemed an immediate concern. Seven days later it snapped off while hauling a loaded spreader. I had not noticed the crack in the drawbar as it would have been removed from service right then if I had. Luckily no one was hurt, and we were able to swap tractors easily enough when it did snap off.

It had been working on the break for a while. I think Deere offers a drawbar support for use with grain carts for the 7xxx. I know they are available for 8xxx.

3406C 300 hours after an in frame. Didn’t get a damper…. Possible contributing factor from what I’ve since read.
Yes indeed--the most overlooked item concerning a rebuild. People very concerned with buying
genuine OEM parts, afraid of aftermarket, yet too cheap to buy a new damper.

I have replaced two dampers now with Vibra-tech (I think) rather than OEM. Any thoughts versus OEM on vibra-tech?

Nothing wrong with them, the major manufacture of dampers. Vibra Tech took over after
the 100 year old French company that invented dampers went out of business in late 80's
And that company built most all OEM dampers. All Cummins were stamped Houdaille.

Houdaille was the original.

Here’s another good one. Scraper spread and the d-8 was falling behind with pushing and ripping. They put the wannabe hero in the 7 to rip while he was pushing. The best scraper hand was picking up the windrow on the left and loading as far as he could on his own then waiting for the 8 to come over and finish loading, said hero decided to clack over and push him through… guy in the 8 loaded the last one, hit reverse and went to back in behind and pick him up. Didn’t look over his shoulder….. tore a hole in the hydraulic tank and knocked the fuel tank clean off, blowing out the back window and dinging up the frame. Nobody hurt fortunately but the 7 lost. 8 had a scratch on the ripper frame. I was cleaning it up and swinging one of the tanks in on that 7 when one of the guys came up and said “that’s all well and good but how do you plan on getting the smell out of that seat?” That’s how it looked when we got to it. Luckily was able to find a couple used tanks, a used window with new gaskets and fix the dinged up cab. It was still an expensive mistake though and that dozer sat out there for all of them to look at for a couple weeks waiting on parts.
