    case 680e shattered flex plate!

Welcome to the HEF. The crankshaft end play is getting close to the limit as Tinkerer mentioned, but that’s not why the flex plate cracked. They just crack. It’s a feature of the creature. It’s good to be concerned about root cause, but don’t overthink it.

If I lease a spot to park my Econoline van, could I live in it? Does your storage yard have a portable toilet?

    Tools For Vibration Diagnostics

During my teaching career, the University I worked for hosted Chrysler Academy training for the local dealers. Their vibration & drivability class was very good. Probably the best of the big three. They showed us how to use an inexpensive Sirometer for analyzing frequency to revolution...

Asking Recommends, Looking across all lines at Skid Steers

Everyday, I drift further away from the iron scene as my days are occupied with trucks. With that said, all I see are new Kubotas. Is it the financing and marketing? Are they just good machines? Are the dealers providing good service? Do the other skid brands suck that bad? Why so many...

    Hydraulic oil dye additive

My wiener is still blue. Hazards of the job, I guess. I don’t put gloves on as often as I should. Wear your PPE, Bois.

    Cat 235 hydraulic issues

Let us know how your season goes. Speaking of gold mines, I just did some work for the Volcano Creek reclamation project. I didn’t realize how large of an a gold operation that was. Fun stuff.

    Cat 235 hydraulic issues

Why did I think you were in Canada? I’m getting my broken 235 threads mixed up. It’s only 11:35am Alaska time and I haven’t made the noon time switch over from coffee to liquor, yet. I’m still mostly sober. Welcome to the HEF. It’s great to have another Alaskan on-board. My office is...

    Cat 235 hydraulic issues

Ok, then. When was the last time you looked at the hydraulic filter? These beasts are far beyond getting long in the tooth. I’d probably check the pump case drain before going much deeper and see how healthy the pumps are.

    Cat 235 hydraulic issues

This comment stands out to me. “ and they are SLOW unless the machine is ran at 100% throttle”. I’ve been called out to diagnose performance issues on excavators many times, just to discover the operator is running the machine at 1/2 speed. It’s like “Dude, spin her up and it will work...

Leaking hydraulic pump case drain line (i think)

Yes Yes Yes I think that line will come out of there. Looks like -16 to me. Just get a couple caps to screw onto the ports. You could probably replace the hard line with a hose. If it was mine, I would silver solder or braze the pin hole and re-use the hard line. You can also build the...

    Homeowners buying old giant excavators?

The dash 5 machines didn’t have a good spot to easily mount a 2-way or a stereo deck. I guess the Japanese didn’t think we needed to be listening to radio or talking with the trucks. Funny the things we keep in our tool boxes. I made a bunch of brackets for mounting Uniden 510 CB radios on...

    Homeowners buying old giant excavators?

Yeah. It was a KPC machine. That picture was taken near Thorne Bay. You helped me diagnose a soft swing issue with it. Do you remember the custom soft swing circuit you guys designed for these in Kent?

    Homeowners buying old giant excavators?

Yeah. They were great machines for their day. This one had the 400 undercarriage and a Pierce Pacific front and cab riser.
