72HDX, Gravel truck is a 1963 as sn indicates 3092492. First digit "3" indicates year when manufactured 1963 next 2 digits indicates month of year "9" = September. Last 4 digits are consecutive production number - its a HDX 33-80 model. "33" indicates it got a 330 Hp engine and "80" is Gross weight is 80.000. I have not been able to find SN at frame or cab of HDX above parked in snow.

Ya its the original cab. But the driver's door isn't. It's from this one (pic below). I thought the gravel truck was a 58. I took a pic of its ID plate this morning (2nd Pic). The gravel truck still operates, except the fuel pump is gone on it right now.

If the driver's door on the gravel truck came from this truck, it must have been mis matched. This one has vent windows. ???

Hayes started building the new model known as the HD (Heavy Duty) in 1952. This was to better compete with KW Mack Pacific. At that time there was a lot of other trucks being used in the bush here in BC as well DiamondT Sterling International The odd Peterbilt and in their own right each of them had more than proved themselves But with the big timber being harvested it quickly became evident that the heavier trucks would go the distance hauling "Off-Road" So the LM and LF Macks and Pacifics as well as the big Kenworths were all fighting for supremacy. Hayes took ideas from the LM Mack ie the offset cab the hood and the rad were all copies of mack-- KW also offered the offset cab on certain units. Pacific stayed with the center mount cab for some years before they switched over also. The offset cab was strictly for driver visability The first 21 HDs built were offset cabs and then the first center mount cab was installed . It worked very well and then it became an option when you ordered a truck. All these trucks came with 34 in frames As you know the LM Mack had a 33 in frame It wasnt till 1964 that Hayes introduced the "WHD" with the 40 in wide frame The first one was sold to Cattermole Tretheway as unit#221

KW's offset cab was offset so little, it hardly seemed worth the bother. I wonder if that was because the KW cab was so tiny, if they offset it any more the sticks would be in front of the passenger seat!

As I recall KW offset is 6". Hayes is 11". I know there were some Hayes in the mid 50's that had 9" or 10" - HDX will defanitly know(I dont have my Hayes notes right on hand). I cant remember Mack LM models offset and Pacific but I'll find them in my hiddings and post them if any is interested.

Re.: HD 35-78 sn# 5757. More pics of Cheam Construction unit #4. 2nd and 4th were shot in summer 2000 in Boston Bar. 1st, 3rd and 5th were shot by EdPacific in 2006 in Port Alberni near Sproat Lake div. Truck still got Oversize Express doors and was operated by Dane Development (Coulson). Skadill posted pic of her from RB auction year ???. I am pretty sure it was before year 2000 but how she got her doors back with Cheam Construction in 2007 is a bit weird:confused: see 1st post on this thread. I took these pictures in 2007.
