We ordered 04290987 067 injectors which should have a big 'A' stamped on them. They instead sent us 04290986 067 injectors that has a large 'B' stamped on them. What does the A and B signify?

Although they look very similar externally, the "A" and "B" designations are a way for manufacturers to help technicians quickly distinguish them to avoid incorrect installation.
For the Volvo EC210CL excavator, accurately distinguishing between these two injector codes is extremely important because they determine the durability of the D6E engine equipped on the machine.
Based on the specifications of this model, here are the points to note:
1. Correct injector code for Volvo EC210CL
For the Volvo D6E engine (the EAE3 version, commonly used on the C series), the standard injector code is 04290987 (stamped with a large A).

• Corresponding Bosch code: 0445120067.

• Reason: The D6E engine has a cylinder capacity of 5.7L. The A-code injector is designed with optimal flow rate and injection angle for the combustion chamber of this D6E piston.

2. Why not use code 04290986 (Stamp B)?

The 04290986 (Stamp B) is typically designed for Volvo D7E engines (7.1L displacement), and is installed in larger models such as the EC240C or EC290C.

• Flow Rate: Injector B has a significantly higher fuel injection flow rate.

• Risk: If injector B is installed in an EC210CL (D6E engine), the amount of fuel injected per cycle will exceed the ECU's calculations. This leads to engine knocking, thick black smoke, and very high exhaust gas temperatures, easily causing piston crown cracking or burning in a short time.

3. Notes on Replacement
During the actual repair process for the EC210CL series, you should note the following two points to ensure perfect system operation:
• Check the markings on the piston top: If possible, lower the piston, and you will see that the piston cup of the D6E is shallower and narrower than that of the D7E, which is why the injection angle of injector A must be different from that of injector B.
• Correction Code (IMA Code): Each Bosch injector has a series of codes (usually 7-9 characters). After replacing the injector with the correct code A, the technician needs to use a diagnostic tool (such as Volvo Tech Tool) to enter these codes into the ECU. This helps the ECU compensate for the mechanical errors of each injector, resulting in smoother engine operation and maximum fuel efficiency.

Thank you so much Lachau! I have searched till blue in the face and never found the info you just shared. We ordered the correct injectors but didn't make sure of the number they sent us. The excavator starts up nice and sounds good, but after a couple minutes it will fog white diesel smelling exhaust....like it was over fueling which with your info it appears to be the problem.

A white fog or white smoke is timing or spraying out of the bowl. Over fueling would be black smoke and higher than normal rpm's, likely a runaway.

It appears you have bought aftermarket injectors not OEM from Volvo? I would suggest calling where you purchased your injectors and asking them these questions.
