Rotator Systems of Recovery Equipment

Hello,

I come from the construction equipment industry and have recently been trying to understand recovery equipment particularly rotator systems from companies like Miller Industries, NRC, and Jerr-Dan in more depth.

I’m especially interested in studying the hydraulic aspects of rotators and underlifts to understand how these systems are designed.

If you’re open to sharing any schematics, service manuals, or technical references, I would appreciate the opportunity to learn from them. Even high-level documentation would do work.

Rotators are nothing more than a crane mounted on a higher speed truck frame. Just a typical crane.
Wheel lifts are either independent or integral mounted with boom. Zacklift was the first to design a
viable working independent unit, but not as powerful as integral, nothing to dramatic about designs.
In order to maintain strength for what it's asked to do the entire unit has to maintain a 100% over
build, and sometimes units fail, mostly from operator error. The hydraulics are rather basic requiring
16 gpm pump at 2,500 to 3,000 psi incorporating open center valves and a minimum of 25 gallons
fluid.

Most winches are no more than 30 to 40,000 lb Braden's to reach a recovery unit rating of 50 tons
capability with swaged wire rope and 20 to 25 gpm pumps.

I have no schematics pertaining to miller, challenger, nrc or vulcan.

This photo shows a 35,000 retracted 16,000 fully extended to 118" lift capability Z35 Zacklift.
Zacklift makes a 45,000 retracted unit also, and supposedly a 50,000 unit now, I haven't seen
one. System consists of one tilt cylinder, one vertical lift cylinder and two stage extension
cylinders. Can be controlled remotely but most like me prefer manual levers to feather operation.
This unit Z35 will lift a fully loaded at 15,000 lb steer at second stage it will tilt at second stage.
Most won't lift totally at full extension. But like any hydraulic system it has 5 main components tank,
pump, valves, cylinders & hosing, not real technical.
