Is this done from time to time or was it someones hair brained idea?

It looks like it went really well!
I can remember as a kid a local tourist company did the same thing but off a flat deck truck. The truck was flatout at 60mph and the plane got off ok.

Actually easier to take off from the trailer than the lake, no drag or suction on the floats. Have been up in the bush before on small lake, perfectly calm day (sucks for fishing as well) pilot couldn't get enough lift to take off, asked if we could do zig zags with the boat to make enough chop to reduce water suction on pontoons or some technical crap like that. Two boats making waves and he cleared the trees, neither of us got run over.
