To further clarify. I’m unsure if it’s truly considered paint or if it’s some sort of dipped protectant, regardless it doesn’t last.
Upon further investigation, the reason it started is due to a dent in the pan. However, dents happen often I find- especially when they run the filter relocation hoses tight under the pan (now deleted). When you dent a car, the paint pretty much always chips, same deal here, but there’s a lot of dented pans out there that I suspect will see this issue in the coming years. I have never had the bottom access panel off when running it, but I didn’t own it the first couple years. The pic below shows the dent that apparently started the loss of the large section of paint, then in the corner is a real small dent that has also started to lose a little paint.
They paint/protect/dip (whatever you want to call it) the front cover as well).
The pan got blasted today and is going back on WITHOUT pickup clogging material…
