Ingersoll Rand XP 185 overheat no apparent cause

The unit went through hot July weather with no problem, and overheated on a job about a month ago, now it overheats any time it is put under load.

Starts and runs smooth no smoke and soot when running
Rad clear
Fan belt ok fan turning
Covers closed back rad cover on
Minor exhaust leakage--was there before overheat issue
Thermostat is out of engine, have tried a new one
Water pump no play--no leakage--unbolted from engine impeller is tight on the shaft outlet appears clear as far as I can see into the engine with a mirror
Temp sender switched from another unit
Air filter ok
Exhaust clear not blocked or restricted
Rad cap 13lb slow leak off--gasket has small rough spot
Tested with Lisle combustion product test for diesels negative for combustion products
Coolant strength a bit low at -32 on a refractometer
Turbo slight side play no excess end play
Oil heater lines clear, can blow air through the circuit
Looking in the rad there are a lot of filled tubes but they were there before this started
I can look down with a light as the rad slowly fills with water from a hose and see communication from one side to the other in most tubes
Anybody got any ideas? Need to look at compressor itself?

Follow the lines from the airend to the filter housing, just past the filter housing is the thermostat body between the filter and steel pipes going to and from the cooler. Remove and disassemble that housing, I'll bet the thermostat is broken.
The other option is the diaphragm on your unloader is leaking. That would cause an uncontrollable load which would trigger an overheat as well.

I don't know why, i totally blanked out on the whole, "engine overheating" and went straight to the compressor side.
There are a buttload of different engine options for the 185. Deutz, deere and doosan, i think there might be some kubotas out there too. Let's start with what engine you have. Is it common rail or pump line and nozzle. Do you have airflow across the radiator? Is the fan pushing air across the radiator. Are the floor pans and round plastic service covers in place? Do you have the hockey puck oil cooler under the oil filter? (DEERE) Are all coolant passages clear? Specifically the vent tube from t-stat hsng to radiator? Lastly, put the thermostat back in.
If you could, post pic of your control panel. There's a bunch of options there as well.

What is the tip off that you're overheating? Coolant puking out? The wedge controller shutting you down? Error codes? Gimme Gimme Gimme. We need more info to point you in the right direction

Would have to go look for the fuel delivery system and it is in another county at the moment.
Airflow through Rad verified with light and hand.
All covers appear to be in place
Puck cooler yes, blew air through that circuit
Flushed and blew air looked with a mirror at what I can see without tearing the body apart
both rad hoses clear
Left thermostat out for mow to avoid draining again because now we are cool again
The Dynagen controller was shutting me down because the threshold was reached. The temperature sensor reading appearing on the screen has good concordance with readings taken with a quality Fluke brand infra-red-thermometer--readings at many places around the block thermostat housing-- mainly focussing on the frost-plug area.
Ran water, air, looked at what I could from the outside with mirors and lights, reassembled, filled, burped, and now it runs cool.
On a CP breaker it ran around 150F--a little warmer just letting it spew air down in the gravel pit so that the noise doesn't bother anybody
I Don't know, this is not exactly my wheel house.

Dynagen? Are you working on a compressor or a genset? Usually we're either dealing with an M4 controller on newer stuff or the wedge controller for earlier machines.
