Help with ‘74 D5 dozer.

Problems with holding speed setting is usually related to the roller/spring gizmos. Not responding to de-acceleration is going to be an issue with the de-acceleration unit itself. The speed holding portion is the same as the illustration I showed except the 63J uses a shorter shaft version.

Been awhile since I posted on this but I came up with a repair. The spring inside the tube was locked up and due to corrosion and years of rubbing the inside wall of the tube the tube itself was worn through. I crossed my fingers and took a grinder with a cutoff wheel to it. When I removed the tube here’s what I had. IMG_2499.jpeg

I had to carefully grind off the remnants of the tubing where it was welded so the “caps” were the correct diameter to fit in a new section of tube. Thankfully the spring, though rusty still seemed in serviceable condition. A local weld shop had some tubing with the right ID. We got things assembled and he welded the ends in. I’m going to put a grease zerk in so I can lubricate it. When I disassembled it the tube was full of a black power like residue which I guessed was dried up old grease. Not sure how they got it in there at the factory. Here’s the finished rebuild. IMG_2500.jpeg

The black stuff, was probably a mix of grease and powdered iron.
