I'm gonna defer to truckshop and DMiller . I see some bad ju-ju going on in the back case of the power divider as if the bull gear support bearing failed, but I see no pocket for it. And yes a pressure lubed carrier will dump oil quick if it finds an exit path.
This image here says the pinion bearing was being thrust forward against the inner case. That tells me someone may have been spinning wheels and caught traction which could have/ would have grenaded the pocket bearing throwing the pinion forward.
