I got that dream job backfilled and handed over to the dirt contractor today. It took 6 trips for pea gravel to defend the pipe against this pile of hammerheads and big nuggets.

I mobilized back across the sound to stay now. I had to move the rig over and back 4 trips with city rush hour traffic, getting about 100 miles in 3~4 hours each time. To heck with that!

^^^^^^ What he said! Looks like whack a mole for 2” pvc pipes. Too long to call them stubs. My OCD had a overdose looking at those pics.

The honeymoon is over. I backfilled #4 last week after big rains, and it was the last time this material could go back.

They claimed they did good job compacting it. I tried to approach the building to jump in there. Not happening here!

PXL_20251027_171417786.jpg

We pumped it down and then Sam shoveled out more than a ton of goo before I could put in the material.

It sucks when you get a big rain at the wrong time especially when you have other jobs and customers are wondering when you're getting to their jobs. Then you have calls for new jobs and they expect you to be there tomorrow.

This job, this day was the last straw. As I drove in I called my wife and laid out the plan. I was going to call the Union Hall first to see what the status was, then I was going to inform my boss that my tank was full. I had enough with mud.
I'll help them interview candidates, I will work on this building and they can have a guy there for the rest going forward. I can drive the truck and get pea gravel if the new guy is not CDL yet, I can shuffle the iron till they get it sorted out.
Those are finite commitments, not dealing with messes like this.
Good morning to us:

The mini needs water wings. They wanted me to open that up with trenches, LOL.

We bagged it, then I informed the boss about my limited future.

Monday was like this. See that telltale sinking crack there, with the footprint puddle in the middle? That is where the plumber went in while painting the lines.
PXL_20251103_170739791.jpg

So we know what is up. The fill next to the footing is the consistency of a cheap milkshake, with just a little skin on top.

Out it comes. Why did they bother putting it in?

PXL_20251103_171757273.jpg
I went in and told the general before I got started that I would need 1 1/4" rock, a couple of boxes of it. He said they would pay, but he wanted me to get it. Oh no.
Screw that.
Call my boss if you want but this is how it goes. Your $@%^^E site, YOUR problem.
He did call and my office told me to arrange to get it.
I told the office to make the arrangements. I was done not getting support. So done now.
Lo and behold, the GC figured out the dirt guys, had a truck coming this way. They diverted the EMPTY TRUCK to bring me the first box.
Folks this is how it is supposed to happen, but apparently I have to educate everybody these days.
That is what you have a dirt crew on site for. They have the trucks, the tools, the manpower. They can write those extra tickets because they are already doing so. I'm one guy with a box of clean pea gravel that I'm not dumping in the mud.
But wait there is more if you are along this far.
GC is listening to me make arrangements for a pump, and he has a pump he is not offering to de-water his own site.
My boss remembers meeting notes about them having pumps etc for dewatering.
Oh look here comes the 2" trash electric pump like the one I was going to rent, and now the hole is getting pumped. Using the plumber's personal generator for power of course. (FACEPALMING).
I had to scoop alongside several footings like this with the 18" while each end kept collapsing in, then hammered in the rock.
lots of little spoonfuls of milkshake.

So done with this :)

Looks more like a sewer treatment plant with all little water compartments, than a building foundation.

We pushed some crane pads in the last two days at both jobs, but neither job looked as bad as yours

You may have mentioned this and I missed it. What is your/your company's role in this project? You mention the dirt crew so presumably you do something more specialized?
