Wow, just walked in from the 700 mile round trip to get the trailer. Uneventful trip with no trouble or surprises. The old F250 drug the trailer back averaging 60 mph. 60 seemed to be the sweet spot for the trailer. Temp got to -1 and the trailer was froze to the ground. I had to rock it back and forth a little to get it broke loose from the ground. The hitch worked out well, just like it was made for the job. Can't wait to hook it to the 5 ton. Calling it quits for the night, it has been a long day. Tomorrow I'll get some pictures. You can see the result of the auction and detailed pictures here, click on the link or copy and paste it into your browser.

Too cold to play outside today

Ground froze, chain saw demolished, and a new toy sitting in the driveway, this job don't stand a chance of being finisher anytime soon!

I love it when a good plan comes together

Over 40 ft long with the trailer weighing in at 5800 lbs.

retractable outriggers at all four corners. Those are generator mounts bolted to the deck. The trailer was made to haul several things including two generators.

The hitch worked out flawlessly

Everywhere we stopped truck drivers had to see and comment about my truck. I bought it new in 1989 and it has yet to turn 75,000 miles. Looks new and is just as tight as the day that I bought it. Diesel engine just now getting broke in. I will have to wash the salt off and from underneath her.

New halogen headlights ordered for the 5 ton as it has a burned out headlight. Also ordered a four camera back up system for it. One to see behind, one to see forward and one to see down each side. It also records in twelve hour loops.

Ended up getting two generators to pull the 3,300 colored lights in parades. Next task is to buy or fab up a set of ramps to get the Jeep on the trailer. If spring don't come on the Mrs. is going to get tired of my playing around and shut me down. I think that I might need to take her to a quilt show or something.

I forgot to mention the old Ford F 700 dump truck sulking around the corner covered with snow. I'll get things going before long, I also filled my diesel transfer tank in the back of the pick up. Last stop on the way in I filled both truck tanks and 105 gallons in the transfer tank. Diesel was 2.27 in Tennessee, 2.59 in Kentucky, and 2.72 in Indiana. Dickjr, I got my picture taken twice and the cost of the toll will be $400 bob tailing up and $7.00 coming back with four axles. They will never see me again, that is of course, unless something good comes up really good for auction at Iron Planet in Indiana that I just can't live without.

Nice looking trailer there Nitelite! BTW, what is the rating on each axle on the trailer. We bought a trailer that had a water tank on it last summer & I think it has 10,000 axles under it. Ours looks a little lighter & smaller than yours. Yours is really HD looking.

The trailer is rated at a 10,000 payload, but that is under the absolute worst conditions. All of the rolling stock that the military owns is rated as such. They teach, "don't worry about the mule, just load the wagon"! If it needed to it would haul my track loader or my dozier.

You may have the same trailer, they did have one version with the water tank mounted.

I hope that was a typo, hate to think they charged you $400 bob tail!

No, ours is different. We needed the water tank to wet down our manufacturing yard during what was for us a record setting summer for dry. We found this one & had to do quite a bit of work to it, as it was badly damaged/ neglected & was fairly old. It has a 1500 imp gal. water tank on it, so the water content itself weighs 15,000# + the tank & trailer. We made some modifications to it to make it functional for the season, then we just finished some more modifications to it, to make it into a multi purpose job site trailer when the water tank is not being used (which is 9 months of the year). Where the tank sat was recessed, so we installed some galvanized grating to act as a spot to carry job boxes & a skid mounted Bobcat 250 Welder. Actually just finished the work on it a couple of weeks back. See the before/after pics.20160611_201834.jpg20160611_201856.jpg20160617_150044.jpg20160623_143244.jpg20161205_130320.jpg

Few more pics with the trailer completed. Water tank was blasted & painted on the outside as well.

Nice job metalman. It is amazing the things that can be done with a little imagination and a will to make it happen. That trailer deck looks to sit a little lower than mine but yours is no light duty trailer. Electric brakes on both axles I suppose? Looks like you are pulling it with a highly capable vehicle too. Does the tank have baffles?

Yes, electric brakes on both axles. One baffle at the center of tank I believe.

4$ and 7$ , you will probably be accessed a handling fee as well , I think F dot is 2.50$. On my FL run , I don't complain much about the toll, well some. You would think that I am spending some decent money that they would be happy to wave the toll fees. I can drive around it but it adds about an hour to my trip. You had the option as well but your extra drive time would out way the toll. I've never crossed the new bridge yet. I seen it from the hospitals there in the curve before you cross. On to more important things. Trailer looks nice. I wonder if it does weigh 5500lbs. Did you cage the brakes to pull it? You may have said and I didn't read it.

I translate the toll into how much diesel fuel that would have bought. The toll could also be considered as a tax on the trailer. I kind of think that there is more to it than taking a picture. A code is probably built into the tag itself and sends an electronic signal. Residents can buy a windshield sticker that identifies them as a frequent flyer and reduces their toll to $1.00.

The trailer brakes are air over hydraulic so all I had to do was to drain the air tank. It also has parking brakes on each axle, they are lever action spring brakes.

Job well done

That sure is a slick paint job that you put on that trailer metalman. When I look at the job you did on the trailer and think about the seat job that you did, I can tell that you take pride in your work and don't half way do anything.

Just looking!

Finally, it is melting and getting warmer. The ground will be rotten until we get a good hard rain. Then maybe I can get back to some dirt work.

Nice catch Ken, Yep that would really be expensive but give it a few years. They now that they have their foot in the door the price will go up every year. That is an easy way to make money.

Back to the 5 ton

When those military vehicles go up for auction they move them around with a giant to motor, (telahandler) I think they call it.) They do a lot of damage with those things. They broke two front axle u bolts on my 5 ton. Today I cut one off with an angle cut off wheel to take with me to match up and have new ones made. Weather permitting, I will get the new ones installed tomorrow.

I have no choice but to cut the old ones off, forget turning that nut. I might salvage the nuts using heat after the ubolt is removed from the truck.
