My fuel gauge is not working on my Cat 299D2. When fueling up, the fuel gauge will show full, however the fuel gauge will stop at 3/4 and will not go below 3/4 even when the tank is empty. Any suggestions? Do you think the "Fuel Level Sender Assembly" is bad and needs to be replaced? or is the float stuck? Has anyone else had this issue? Seems like something goes wrong with this Cat 299d2 every other day (1400 hrs)1000000011111.JPG

Got a serial number? The part you posted is an updated sender to fix false readings, released on 7/22/2016.

check resistance of sender when close to empty
"Electrical resistance of an empty tank is 240 to 250 Ohms.
Electrical resistance of a full tank is 28 to 33 Ohms. "

G..G..G..Granville.........!! Fetch your cloth.
Try these diagnostic procedures. I know that on your particular machine you can't pull Codes without ET but there are only two possibilities and a lot of the tests are common between the two. A few basic electrical tests and it should throw up where the fault lies.

Removed sending unit and moved the float up and down while connected to multimeter. Ohms resistanc @ empty was 170 ohms and full was (no reading) and 3/4 full it was reading 186 and if you moved it down 1" it was reading 86. Seem like it was all over the place. When sending unit was in the tank and tank was empty it was reading 86.

I assume I need a new sending unit.

Question?

Is there a Generic Sending Unit that will work with the Cat 299d2
(Cat Part # 451-3798 fuel level sender assembly ($338.49)

I've seen on the forum where some guys have bought a after market sending unit for $40, but can't seem to find one that cross matches the Cat part #.

Thanks!
