the
idler shaft in the torque converter case is leaking. The shaft is removable from the outside of the torque converter case and sits between the hydraulic pump for the transmission and the hydraulic pump for the loader. My question is, can the O ring on the idler shaft be replaced without dropping the idler gear inside the torque converter case ?

Usually yes, on most Case 850s you can pull the idler shaft and replace the O-ring without the gear dropping, because the gear stays supported inside the case. But be careful — some models use thrust washers that can shift if the shaft comes all the way out. Best move is to slide the shaft out just enough to change the O-ring and slide it right back in. If you yank it completely and something drops, the converter case may have to come apart.

Thank you for your reply. The way this machine is engineered I believed that there had to be a way to change the O ring without dropping something in the case. My thought was as you had stated which is to pull the shaft out just far enough to facilitate replacing the O ring but I needed to hear it from someone who knew. Thank you again!

I
replaced the idler shaft seal pulling the shaft out just far enough to replace the O ring as you suggested. The operation was a success. Thank you Stephen for your assistance. Thank you Dave for seconding Stephen's instructions.
