Have a 2006 CAT 287B VZSA03585 with aux hydraulics that do NOT work. I bought the machine a couple years ago, and went to use an auger with no operation. I am looking to rule out the electronic controls, but need trouble shooting advise. I have an electrical background, but in commercial industrial AC electric. Can read schematics, but would like to narrow down the immediate things to look into.

Does your RH joystick have a thumb roller or push buttons.?

I'll send you an electrical schematic. Keep an eye on your messages.

Immediate thoughts would be to ensure the LH & RH joytick buttons/roller/etc are working correctly.

The right hand has both the thumb roller on the left side of the right hand joystick, with (2) buttons to the right of it. I believe I can hear the solenoids for the "high flow" working when I depress either of the two buttons, but nothing when I use the roller forward or back.

auxiliary hydraulics and high flow are 2 different things if your machine has high flow there will be a extra pump bolted to the hydrostat under the cab. some attachments need high flow and if its a cat attachment will have a jumper wire built into the work tool harness plug.....you can make a jumper wire for the plug or buy a cap with the wire installed from your dealer to jump the correct pins and activate the high flow pump when the auxiliary hydraulics are activated. The thumb wheel works on pulse width modulation 0-99%....so you can regulate the oil flow the other 2 buttons are I think auxillary oil on/off with a hold button on the left joystick top left I seem to remember. if you look on the lh and rh windows in the cab the are decals explanation of the functions better still in you operation manual in a pocket behing the seat

Do you have the auger (or any other work tool) you mentioned in your OP handy.?

If so hook it up, start the machine, and press one of the buttons on the RH joystick. The tool should move in one direction. Press the other button and the tool should move in the opposite direction.

To check the output voltage of the thumbwheel it should be around 5.7v with the switch in the centre and vary by approximately 0.8v above/below that value when the switch is rolled fully in one direction or the other. The supply voltage to the switch is 8v which is produced inside the ECM.

As @stourpaine mentioned above the buttons on the RH joystick only activate the AUX functions in one direction or the other. They are nothing to do with High Flow which incidentally your machine was not originally built with. So unless it was added later (unlikely IMO) you only have Standard Flow.

Are you confusing High Flow with Continuous Flow perhaps.?
To activate CF you will need an attachment such as a mower connected to the machine. Press one of the buttons on the RH joystick so that the attachment is rotating in the desired direction, then press and release the CF button (rear of the two buttons on the LH joystick). Release the button on the RH joystick within 1 second of releasing the CF button and Continuous Flow should activate.

in short if when you activate either on of those 2 buttons and you hear the engine load up oil, its most likely reaching the couplers if you had a hose with a male quick coupler on one end and a female on the other and plugged them in then activate the button oil should do a loop or just hook up your attachment hop in and activate the oil flow with the button usually the button at the top of the joy stick will be the right direction......now as you dont want to have to hold the button! for extended times! so read your manual and find what to press to lock it. this will be regular flow a auger May need to have high flow to operate at its peak performance ,but will still work and turn on regular flow. Most factory machines with hi flow were decaled accordingly another tell tail is you will have 4 plug ins on the boom and a case drain plug in. the 2 smaller plug ins are regular flow the 2 large plug ins are hi flow they allow more flow once the hi flow pump is activated ......if you have one

I do have an auger and it connects to the "regular flow" ports on the arm for hydraulics to connect to. When I depress either of the (2) right side buttons on the RH joystick, I can hear the engine load while I press each button, but nothing happens with the attachment. When I actuate the thumb roller, nothing happens, no noise either.

I did purchase the manuals, so I will dig into those (when I can find time).

sounds like possible one of the hoses is not either compatible to the couplers on your machine or not pushed all the way in so the line has no return and deadheading therby loading up the system they can be VERY hard to push in and lock. Some older machines had a pressure release button in the cab this was pushed with the key on but engine not running. tbh they did not work to well.try loosening your attatchment fittings to relive any residuall pressure it will make it easier to plug in.....remember to retighten them!

when you had the lines plugged in did you see one of the attachment lines twitch when you operated a auxiliary function?

No twitching on either line that I noticed. I will check to see if this machine has a relief button also.
