226b hard starting

ok so this 226b i have has always been hard to start in cold weather. 30degrees f is the coldest it gets here. i use the glow plug for 30 sec. max and crank for 20 sec. max. usually takes 2 cycles before it starts. when its cranking over i get alot of greyish color smoke from exhaust. once it starts it runs great, no miss or anything. any ideas?

I believe I would verify that the glow plugs are all doing their job first. If you need test procedure and specs, post serial number and we can begin to help.

do i have to get one from CAT or can i get one from autoparts store (napa, oreilleys, etc..)?

Well i replaced the relay and the fuse and still no power at the glow plugs. i can hear and feel the relay click when the switch for the glow plugs is pressed, but no power at the connection to the glowplug rail

Have to start following the electrical smoke through the wiring in that case. You must have another leak........

How the heck do you measure 110amperes with a 6V7070?
There's no way that multimeter can measure current that high.

my brand new relay went bad already. the wiring all looks good with no direct short to ground anywhere. after pulling the glow plugs and inspecting them ive come to realize they must be the reason that the relay went bad in the first place. the tips of the glow plugs dont look bad at all, very little buildup on them. but after bench testing them, im convinced they arent no good. im gonna order them now and ill update my findings once i get them installed

I've had a glow plug on my 248 burn out internally where it didn't look bad until you pulled it out of the cylinder. Shorted out the whole circuit. Not sure if yours is similar.

Well i got the new glow plugs and installed them today...... and that fixed the problem yay! thx to all who tried to help much appreciated
