I recently purchased a used Caterpillar model 242 skid steer with about 2100 hours. I have been running the machine and it has been working well. I give many thanks to those who have helped me so much already on this forum. I have posted a few times and all the assistance has been excellent. I was able to diagnose the fuel supply issue and the joystick issues I was having.

A few days ago while running the machine it began to stutter, the idle became very rough and erratic. During the rough idle the machine would still move forward and back but I noticed reduced power. The hydraulics would go up but not down and I could hear what sounded like a solenoid or hydraulic valve clicking over my right shoulder on the passenger side of the machine in the engine compartment. I hit the emergency brake switch and shut the machine off. When I turned it back on the problem was gone but quickly returned a few minutes later.

I am not sure where to begin. I have read that the hydraulic fluid level being too high or too low can cause problems. I recently emptied the whole system and replaced the unknown brand and unknown age fluid with new Caterpillar hydo. I checked the level as per the manual and it is right at the full mark. Could there be too much fluid in the system causing this issue?
