    Transmission Dyno test

Hey nige, I’ve been out of town for the last week. I asked for pictures of the tear down, but of course the guy said he wasn’t there when they took the sprag clutch apart. I just got bunch of pictures of the converter parts. It wasn’t much help. I might just have the cat dealer go through the...

    Transmission Dyno test

That is very helpful to understand. They are supposed to be sending me some photos of when they took it back apart. Thanks

    Transmission Dyno test

Nige, yes it has a freewheel clutch. Our initial thought was the springs were installed backwards and that was creating the low stall. Rebuild shop took it apart and said they were correct. I’m skeptical at this point.

    Transmission Dyno test

Every cat dealer I’ve talked to can only spin them. They are looking into who has a bench that can load the transmission. Not easy to find apparently. Long story short is the transmission was rebuilt and when put back into the machine it won’t pass a stall test. Engine won’t get past 1200rpm. It...

    Transmission Dyno test

Does anybody know a facility that can do a full stall test on a 980H transmission? Apparently there is two types of dyno test, which was news to me. A lot of shops can only spin them and check pressures and run it through the gears. I need somebody that can load the transmission with a load cell...

    980H torque converter getting hot

I don’t have that service history. It came out of a big quarry on Nevada. It’s got about 26,000hrs so it’s on a second or third life.

    980H torque converter getting hot

Interesting. I will look into it. I didn’t know there were different types of converters. We do use it for load and carry to feed the plant. It’s been great and a big fuel savings over the 988 we used before. No service codes

    980H torque converter getting hot

I had my mechanic start troubleshooting. He checked pressures and all were good except for the lube circuit. It had no pressure. Pulled the suction strainer and found remnants of part of the old speed sensor that was damaged from before I bought it. We have replaced that sensor. Found the treads...

    980H torque converter getting hot

The transmission filter showed no sign of debris, but the oil was brownish and smelled burnt. Could the discoloration be from just the oil getting hot and not necessarily from clutches slipping?

    980H torque converter getting hot

I agree, we will look into the suction and rule that out. The engine is running cool. It doesn’t fluctuate like the transmission. If nothing is found in the suction screen, do you think transmission cooler would be suspect? If not, where would you go next? Thanks

    980H torque converter getting hot

Serial: Jms01870 I have not checked pressures because I have no service manual and not sure what they should be. Temperature goes up to the red and comes back down to just above mid gauge after about a minute on idle. Had it parked on idle for about 5 before the gauge would go below half. My...

    980H torque converter getting hot

I have a 2006 980H with the converter temp getting hot. It hasn’t had a history gwtting warm, it just happened all of a sudden. The transmission functions normally with no slipping or shifting issues. I cut the filters open and they were clean. No debris at all, but the oil was dark and smelt...

D8T Track traps material and over tensions

You’re absolutely correct. We’ve been doing business with them since the 80s. I’ve been told they are working on getting an application specialist involved. We’ll see what happens. Thanks

D8T Track traps material and over tensions

Thanks for your input. I don’t have any specific pictures right now. I’m out of town until next month. I’m going to lean on cat to stand by their product and see what they have for a solution before I spend money o. It. The problem can be worked around for the moment and works good for ripping...

D8T Track traps material and over tensions

All blades are SU. It’s not a push and carry situation and it’s all hard rock that has to be ripped. Most of th time it rips and shorts pushes to 988 that loads over the edge. All the same operators with 25-50 yrs experience with different situations. Nobody can keep the fines out of the rails...

D8T Track traps material and over tensions

We are using the old D8H for those certain tasks because they don’t have this issue. The T works good up on top for ripping and pushing but can’t handle getting the fines getting in the rails. It’s never been a problem with the conventional track. I think cat needs to rethink some things with...

D8T Track traps material and over tensions

You really shouldn’t use words you don’t understand bro. You don’t know my situation, so try to understand before you throw around the insults and tout your operating experience. It makes you an a***ole. By the way, they do make shoes to help alleviate this problem. Go educate yourself before...
