416 Caterpillar backhoe project

Bought this old beat up fixer upper backhoe just to use around the yard and plow snow for the winter.The guy i bought it from said he was using it to load trucks in his yard of a small paving stone company .He said it was working fine and then it stalled .He siad it was leaking coolant out the side a bit on about behind the filter above the starter of the Perkins 4.236 .It is leaking in between the head and the block.He said there was air in the fuel lines and when he tried to prime it the starter gave out and he decided to sell it as he has many newer backhoes in the yard.I got it home today and the ground from the frame to the battery had a pair of vicegrips holding it on.Anyways i fixed that connection but when i turn the key all i hear is a click to the right of the keyswitch behind the fuses .I have an old international gasser tractor and have never worked on a diesel .Any help would be appreciated

If I remember right the click is probably the main power solenoid. Probably need to remove side cover and check for power at starter

There is nearly 12 volts at the solonoid when i turn the key so i assume there is something wrong with the solonoid or the starter

If you want an electrical schematic then poist up a machine Serial Number. It's probably a 5PC-prefix.

I cut my backhoe-ing teeth on a straight boom English 416 like that, an extendahoe 2wd. Best of luck with it.

well i am thinking it is .It's behind the bracket for the filter that goes into the fuel pump and the lines that go to the injectors.I put some coolant in the rad yesterday and i notice today it's seeping out without the engine running which the engine doesn't run at this point.Yes the enginge turns over .I turned it with a wrench at the flywheel/fan and the coolant is not in the engine oil

Got the starter out.It looked like it was rebuilt not long ago. There was rust in it and the brushes were stuck in and could not move .I got them moving .Not sure if i can just buy a new set of brushes and springs for it and i think i should check armature to see if its shorted.Before i took it apart i tapped it fit a hammer on the bench and it tried to slowly

If the starter has not been replaced by an aftermarket unit then spare parts are available. See the parts attached breakdown.

I think I would get the starter working, then there is a bolt on top of transfer pump on side of engine remove it and clean the screen put it back to gather and use the leaver on that pump to prime the system but you might have to turn engine to get it to pump. then open the line on I believe number 3 injector at the injector leave the other lines tight opening them lets it take air in

It looks like the brush assembly and the field are all together unless i am wrong

That starter looks like it was very hot. if you have a starter shop around might be a good thing to get a exchange. about your leak is it possible it's the soft plug ??

there is a rusty freeze plug behind that bracket. It may be as simple as that. People don't keep up on antifreeze in terms of corrosion protection, and those mild steel freeze plugs will rust right through.

i would be very happy if it was .I will try and get that bracket off to see .There was a pile of dirt in between that bracket and the block/head .
