So what happens when your in a bad spot on a nice new dozer in the woods fighting wild fire, and it goes into limp mode? Or the fire truck does the same?

I understand what you are saying. In reality modern machines maintained correctly are relatively reliable.
But my answer is start throwing matches. Burn a fire break. Dig a hole under machine bury face and pray.

California used to have exemption for fire machines- i.e. they could still be older machines and not comply with their regulations, and still use it for fire fighting. I don't know if that is still the case.

Military trucks are emissions exempt.

The answer is "they" just do not care. Somebody is going to die one day if they have not already.

I had a fire chief tell me a year or two ago that the state was trying to get them to get rid of a 2001 fire engine because it was not emissions compliant, all it does is sits in a barn until they either take it to a fire or need it as a spare, probably runs less than 2000 miles a year.

That ship sailed a long time ago.

CARB is going to make heavy trucks have some sort of emissions inspection quarterly soon. If that is the case, they can obviously remove the limp/punishment mode because if you have a CEL the most you can run is 3 months before you fail your quarterly and it will save people from getting stranded.

LA County running the older machinery? Cat D8R fire dozer rolls the coal at 1.46 in this.

Are CARB going to buy them a new dozer?

Not that long ago California Dept of Forestry was running Cat equipment so old it had oval tracks. Also had full glass and air conditioning. But I think that is finally ancient history now.

Last time I checked, California equipment counted hours run per year so if it is a seldom used machine, you could hang onto it for a long time. And fire use did not count against those hours. Probably because the pollution saved by stopping the fire outweighs the small amount made by the Cat. Nevertheless those old dinosaurs are dying out one by one.

That is why they need to make new ones of them again.

Realistically, the same thing that happens if you blow a hyd line, or throw a track, or any other machine down condition. The difference is that machines don't typically go into full derate immediately.
