This is for people who rent out trailers. I need some thought and information. A little background: I owned a dump truck (4 of them) for over 20 years for my own business. ( under 20,00 gvw) I finally retired a few years ago and my dulmp truck just sat inside my building. Paying insurance every month, license plates every year. I only used it a couple times in 4 years so I sold it (got more out of it than I paid in 1999) I still have a small need from time to time for a small dump. Hauling a small load of gravel to refresh my drive way, load of fire wood, mulch for the yard. I ran on to a small dump bed trailer (the kind of dump insert you put into a pick up bed 4x8) mounted on a pretty nice tandum axle trailer frame. I bought it and as usual pretty rusted. I repaired it and a good paint job. Some fellow came along and wanted it right away. I bought another one (just the bed, and found a trailer to put it on.) Now every one wants to borrow it because it is small and they could pull it with a smaller truck. I've since bought another one so I have two now. (wont lend it out. So the question I have for people in the rental business what problems do you have. #1. Do you check their drivers license and insurance card before renting. #2 Do you require that they have wireing hook up for lights (what about elec. brakes) #3 do you inspect their hitch. #4 what portection do you have that they return it or saying it was stolen while in their posession. Would it be possible to show me what type of contract you have them sign. What is your libiality? I am not wanting to get into this big time, just make a few $$ when some one needs a really small dump. Haul garden waste, mulch, small load of top soil or gravel, load of wood, load of hay or straw, lumber, etc. Input is appreciated.

My .02,, DO NOT rent out your equipment. They can pay you for the whole trip and you will know how your equipment is treated or you will have problems when they bring it back and they have no idea how that got damaged.

Personally I wouldn't rent out a pencil without the proper commercial business insurance. Not because I would worry so much about the renter breaking my pencil (and I'm sure they would) but because people are so stupid today that they would find away to use my pencil to hurt or kill someone else with it and then I'd be the one getting sued for it. Imagine the guy you rent the trailer to loads it heavy in the rear end causing it to start swaying at speed. The guy cuts off a gas tanker that then rolls over and bursts into flames under an interstate overpass that collapses. You get the picture.

All one needs to do is go take a gander at the carnage laying in the back lot at a Penske yard,
that will change minds in a hurry.
