A regular 4LE1 or 4LE2 might work.

But the question is why, 90% of the value of a generator is the engine so if the engine is no good we usually scrap the whole thing

Replacement brand new unit with a 4LE2X is $40k but a used unit with a standard 4LE1/2 is not worth near that much. Which is what you will have when you are done with this swap. Just go buy a used old one if that is what you want, they are everywhere.

What is wrong with the Isuzu engine anyway?

Generators use a standard SAE flywheel and bell housing.

There are comparable Kubota, Perkins, etc. engines out there.

Will an engine you find be adaptable to the gen head?
