I picked up this Cummins name plate a few days ago and have been trying to find another one like it to figure out how old it is. 28" long x 4-1/2" wide x 1/2" thick and solid brass, very heavy for what it does. I'm guessing it would have been mounted on a stationary engine and it does have some grey paint on it that looks a lot like the color used on the generators for the US Navy in the 1940s but there also appears to be Cummins Gold paint on top of the the grey paint and yellow on top of the gold. The red paint showing on Dependable & DIESEL looks more like red oxide primer.

WWW.
1940's and real early 50's. And your correct a stationary--never used for on road.
There was a stationary about a year ago on CL that had same logo and it was a
navy piece. The gold paint was original.
