So, I did a stupid last night and tipped my 247b track loader on it's face. I was carrying my bucket high and stopped quick on some soft dirt. Went flat on it's face. Tried righting myself and couldn't so killed the power. Well, it didn't kill the motor. The motor started running off of the oil for about 2 minutes. Looked like a fire coming out of the exhaust. We pulled the filter and it has a good amount of aluminum shavings in it. Cat says the motor will be $6700. The ****** thing is that it only has 33 hours on it.

I'll post a picture later.

First thing I learned when running skidloaders, is when it feels like it is going down to drop the arms NOW.... Not sure why that wouldn't be the first reaction instead of shutting it down.

I rolled a 95xt case into a pond on its side, now my first reaction was to turn it off before it went under, luckily I did. Spent the afternoon drying it out, that was after my HOT shower, since it was late november in Tulsa. Luckily someone was there to help me out of the pond, I was starting to go into shock..BRRR....

I would run until the motor goes for good, really $6700 doesn't sound that bad for cat. I with Rolloffhill, I guess something good did come for learning to run one of those POS skid loaders.

Yup, its a natural reaction, as soon as you start to feel the weight shift you need to slam the bucket to the ground, even if it means you hit your head on the roof of the cab. It could be worse, you could be thrown out and crushed....:)

PSDF350, I didn' think he was being a smart ass -- and if he was, I really have no idea how the warranties work on construction equipment. My computer has an accidental damage clause so I must have applied that across the board to machinery as well... :Cowboy

I imagine very few warranties would cover damage due to operator error.

That having been said, sure Cat320 was being a smart ass, by stating the obvious, but in context, that was just being a smart ass in a good way. (Trust me on this--it's something I strive for in at least 50% of my posts.) :bouncegri

With any machine, it's a good idea to transport with the bucket down. You're lucky you went on the nose rather than the side, you'd have probably been hurt if that were the case. The center of gravity gets so high any abrupt movement can spell disaster.

I am suprised you couldn't get it to bog down and stall out after it flipped? Maybe you did not think of it, I may not have either but that is something I was told once, that it may keep running on its side and to try to stall it by overloading the hydros. Never had it happen though.

To bad.

I agree with the idea of running it till it dies. Change the oil twice and go back to work. Bank a little from each job for a motor. Who knows it could run a long time. If not then eat some credit fixing it. Not going to damage anything else.

So far it looks like it will be an insurance claim. I still haven't been able to pull the picture of it off my phone. I'll keep you guys in the loop.

Check your insurance and pry for the best. Problem will be that you will be with out for a bit during the summer. It would be nice if these lessons where learned with out hurting machine or yourself but most of the time it cost money. I sunk my excavator last year up to the seat in a pond and it cost me a new starter and someone to pull me out. I was very lucky that the motor did not go. Water was coming out of the exhaust when I spun it over by the fly wheel.
Lesson learned no ponds around already preexisting creeks.

I don't know if it will work with your phone but, with mine I can e-mail pics to myself (or anyone for that matter) by sending the pic as a message.
Do it the same way you would sending a pic to another phone but, instead of entering a phone number just enter an e-mail address.

Hope this helps. We like pics.:thumbsup
