What would cause my crank sensor to be damaged on my John Deere 329e. is there something connected to the flywheel that came apart?

On that machine, the tone wheel is on the flywheel (see below). Has this unit ever had a starter nose cone failure? Drive coupler failure? I suspect something in there flying around.
