How come you can only get another 16.5 gross for 7 axles? Bridge?
Yes bridge laws. If I move the bunk back on the truck I can't get enough on the steer so it can get you either way. I prefer the five axle tractor and two axle trailer over a 3-axle trailer as I'd rather pack the weight than pull it.

Maybe I'm weird but I think trucks look better with big rubber up front.
I like the look of it better with a 385s up front. So far the first week with them they seem pretty good. They're nice and smooth and I think they ride a little better. Plus with 13,8 to 14,000 on the steer axle I needed them to be legal
