have had this machine for 20 years, just serviced the spool valves and discovered that it has a float feature that operates through the lift pedal. Can anyone explain to me how to activate the float feature. It has a bucketing positioning button on the control panel, no clue, what does this do? I suspect that the float feature works through the lift pedal.... any suggestions?

With the arms down, machine off (until you get used to it) push the top of the pedal down, it will detent there and be in float mode. Push the back of the pedal to resume normal operation.

Sometimes you have to give a quick stab to the top of the pedal to put it in float. I'd guess a bucket positioning button is like return to dig on bigger machines. It puts the bucket level when it's on the ground. Not really sure why you'd need it on skid steer if you can see the cutting edge. The button could possibly be for float too.

To keep from dumping the contents of the bucket on your head. IF i remember correctly it only works while raising the bucket.

It has nothing to do with float.

OK, that makes sense, it's a self leveling valve that automatically tilts the bucket to dump when your lifting the boom up so you don't dump a load in your lap. Yes it only works while lifting. It's odd you have to push a button to engage it. Usually it's always engaged. Bucket positioning valve is kind of a misleading title for it. Damn it's expensive. I got mine new for $500cad. and no labour to install it because another customer didn't want it and it was already on the machine. The dealer just wanted to sell it I guess. It was in 94 but still I can't believe they're over $1200us now. It's not the most complicated valve.

Bucket position was an option, your machine may or may not have it. As stated above, have to give the pedal a good stab forward with engine running and BICS enabled. Control spools are locked until you do this.
