CO, Sycamore tree didn't help but those rafters are a little spaced out aren't they, especially for your snow loads. Also something I faintly remember from eons ago was a osha joke about all long pipe had to be labeled long pipe on both ends so inspector didn't have to walk the full length of pipe or something like that. There was a whole page of those rules on the wall inside a job office trailer.

I don't think his shop is very old, maybe 2-3 years. I don't there's any inspection to code out there. It's a tin roof built like a pole barn

Wheww, that was a close one. MEXICO, missouri....

Been up to Iowa to see my parents. Looking at moving them from their house (which they don't want to do), to a apartment/ assisted living place.

Dad's driving is getting bad, he's getting lost, confused. It hasn't been sudden, been coming on for a long time. Mom is still sharp, but getting worn out taking care of him. My sisters are closer to them, but the reality is, if something happens to mom, dad can't be home alone any more. Mom is planning on them going straight from their house to the graveyard. But mom doesn't drive, and she doesn't really cook anymore. So we are exploring options, I was up there 2 weeks ago, and we toured one facility, toured another one this week.

I think they are really past being able to live in the one, which is "independent" living, basically a apartment complex- you have full kitchen, laundry machines in the basement- no medical staff. The other facility has levels of care within the same building. You can start "independent"- you have a car, only one meal provided, live the rest of your time in the apartment, next level is assisted with 3 meals, help available for meds, showering, they do your laundry, nurses on site, and they also have a third level of full memory care on site, with card access, for when/ if he starts wandering around.

I would love if mom would be here to transition dad to the facility living. vs if something happens to her, he's going to be lost in a new place by himself. One of the big deals is dad still smokes. And he's never going to quit. But the place with 3 levels has nurses that smoke, and there's a spot by the dumpster with a outdoor ash tray, which pretty much seals the deal for me. He's going to love standing out in 10 degree's, but for him, that's better than not lighting up.

Also went up to waverly Iowa to get parts for the electrical swivel on the link belt 40 ton. Link belt wants $8 grand and minimum 60 days for any parts for the swivel, or a whole swivel, doesn't matter. The oem for the electric swivel is in waverly. They were super helpful and are getting us some parts.

One of the biggest issues, is the decision making problems. Dad always made all the decisions: money/ car buying/ house/ - mom is totally incapable of deciding to do something, she'll turn herself in circles worrying about something, and in the end- do nothing. Dad is incapable today, of making any decisions. His short term memory is totally gone, and understands about 1/4 of the things going on. He knows mom is upset right now, but not really why she's upset. He knows they are looking at places, but he'd just rather stay at his house.

The rub is that mom- won't let someone else make the decision for her. She's got the reins in her hands now, after 60 years of having dad running the show. For example: They need a smaller car, so she can end up driving it, dad is enough there, that he's mentioned to me trading cars. But mom would be totally incapable of going to a car dealership and buying a car. So we're stuck with them in a 4 door expedition el, and a 4 door 6' bed f150. Neither of which she has any business trying to drive. And he's going to lose his license. So here we are, two huge vehicles, dad can't drive, she shouldn't drive, but she won't buy something else- and is adamant that "what we have is just fine".

So the current plan, is I'm probably going to have to go and just buy a vehicle, and put it in their driveway. Mom will throw a fit, but then a week later they will hopefully end up driving it.

And I'm going to have to go put in the deposit on the assisted living place, and start paying for it. And mom will throw a fit "they are far to young for such a place- everyone there is 20 years older than them (they are 80)", etc- etc, but in two weeks it will all blow over. Hopefully.

Fortunately, Dad was a great planner, and made great investments, and the $ is going to be fine. So at least that isn't one of our issues.

Don’t really like hearing that but it’s life.
My dad will be 86 this year and he’s got 65% grey matter in his head.
Alzheimer’s runs in our family, his father made it to 87.
My step mom just came out of the hospital for Afib and is so overweight, she can’t do much.
Very soon we will be in your position.
At the moment, they live in their own house but it’s deteriorating rapidly.
Money, fortunately isn’t the issue, it’s my father’s stubborness.
It’s at the point now, he doesn’t report any more minor accidents because insurance is pretty angry with him.
Getting old sucks.
Doesn’t help, I will be getting a T7 to L2 fusion in 2 weeks and can’t really help them out as much as I’d like.
Good luck.
