Cat 235 Boom Cylinder Pin Removal

Oh don't get me wrong- if I could easily remove the bottom pin and just toss the whole cylinder in the bed of my truck, that's exactly what I'd do. But...we assume the bottom pin will be pretty tough without the correct pulling tools. Hopefully that pin is free like the top and it's simple for...

Cat 235 Boom Cylinder Pin Removal

After getting the rod horizontal and ready to pull apart, what's the best way to not make a mess of hydraulic oil when removing the rod? I'm sure there's a few tricks other than filling up a couple 5 gallon buckets??

Engine only runs with full choke

Glad you got one problem solved. To keep the carb clean, I'd change out the inline filter and replace the hose between the filter and carb. As said above, old fuel lines will release garbage internally...and it doesn't take much to gunk up a jet.

Engine only runs with full choke

I gotta ask why? Would an inline glass indicator fit the need instead?

Engine only runs with full choke

Whether we like it or not, pretty much all plastic and rubber based products will change over time due to material degradation. Adding in exposure to heat, oils, fuels, solvents, UV, or constant flexing/vibration just greatly accelerates the degradation. Anytime I hear something is...

Engine only runs with full choke

Thinking more about it, I'm leaning on Truck Shop's analysis. Maybe you have multiple things going on but follow Truck Shop on this one...

Engine only runs with full choke

It's easy to break vacuum and suck air instead of fuel with old fuel lines. You'll never see a drip but it will suck air instead of fuel. Not sure if the fuel tank is above the carb or not or if there is a lift pump but agree will all the above. Clean out the jets and replace hoses is a good...

    What screwdriver do I need?

Thanks, Nige. As you can tell, I've only had to repair the smaller connectors and never an ECM one. Let's hope it stays that way for a while....

    What screwdriver do I need?

I thought the process for removing the male pins was slightly different than removing the female sockets? Isn't there a wedge lock holding the female sockets in place that needs to be removed before that socket can be extracted out the back? I don't think we confirmed if he's working on the...

    Simple things difficult to find

A couple other options for no barb, no bulb if you're pulling it off a lot. Use a 5/16" tubing swage-lock to 1/8" NPT and put whatever stub length of stainless or copper tubing you want as your connection. So if you want really simple...

Cylinder rebuilt in shop in 2023 had rod nut back off during use.

Another idea is to drill/tap a decent sized set screw through one of the rod nut flats. Doesn't even have to a set screw as it could be a cap screw or small bolt to be a locking screw. Crank on your big nut, then crank down on your locking screw. Or even a modification of Harley's idea...

Cylinder rebuilt in shop in 2023 had rod nut back off during use.

That's interesting because I grew up with a father who was a tool and die maker for the military. Calling him a machinist, or even a master machinist, was insulting to him, but he did teach me how to ensure a screw never backed out of anything by disrupting few threads up near the head. Same...

    What screwdriver do I need?

The five point star bit is a pentalobe or is also lazily referred to as a 5-point torx. Either way they suck and true pentalobe security bits are best purchased online through Amazon or such. I've looked at Home Depot, Lowes, Northern, Tractor Supply, Harbor Freight, etc. and have never seen...

Cylinder rebuilt in shop in 2023 had rod nut back off during use.

Well, you have two rods available. Take the one with a better sealing surface and skip the loctite 'glue'. Crank on your nut and use some good metal glue. I promise it won't back out....

Cat 235 Boom Cylinder Pin Removal

Arrgh. I'm concerned I'll be in the same boat soon with my 325B that is starting a leak on the right boom cylinder too so I'm following you on this. But....I also wondered if instead of removing the whole cylinder, could it be possible just unpin the rod on the boom and then slide the whole...
